Write a 500 word critical comparison of the two images paying attention to:
· Choice and organization of font and style of illustration
· Purpose and meaning of image
· Target/potential audience of the image
· The social and historical contexts relevant to production of the image
The first image, is a perfect representation of the American Dream, and the strong embodied patriotism that still exists in majority of America today, the red and blue symbolism, all these facets combine to represent America on top of the world. The reasoning behind the image possibly created to represent the 100 year mark of the 1776 American Revolution. There is a strong depiction of 3 main qualities, humour, success and power. Depicting America on top of the world with satire.
In each image although the mode of transport may have changed with technological advancements and new governmental systems inputted from the British. You can tell from the second image that their lives are controlled and monitored by the British i.e. reflecting the view of the British on Africans at this time. Notice also how in both images the Africans are portrayed as looking down, even before the British intervened. While the British man overlooks with a demeanor and expression of power. This reflects how they viewed the rest of the world not just the Africans at this time. As his stance pretty much conveys the rule of the British Empire. And how the British were once on top of the world. It also conveys how all African Americans were mistreated as they were seen as a completely different species at this time. Marketed towards the British public, as a demonstration of the colonization of Africa, this expresses dominance because at this time 2/3s of the world was under British control, they achieved this through many ways one was through technological advancements, thus conveying their superiority, in the same manor of image 2, they both depict themselves above the rest. Image 1 has more of a light heartedness and humour in its approach, however image 2 represents scary primitive images. There is also a contrast in the role of woman in both images.
