STUDY TASK 03 - READING AND UNDERSTANDING TEXT

RICK POYNOR - NO MORE RULES

The book tells this story in detail, breaking down a broad, multifaceted field of design activity into key developments and themes: the origins of postmodern graphic design; deconstructionist design and theory; issues of appropriation; the revolution in digital type; questions of authorship; and critiques of postmodern graphic design. Each theme is illustrated by spectacular and significant examples of work produced between 1970 and 2000 that changed the way in which designers and their audiences think about graphic communication. POynor seems to be more interest in forms of visual communication that fall between strict definitions of art and design.

5 quotes:

  • Designers were visual interpreters of the emerging mood and they made the assumption that their audiences were sufficiently literate in a visual sense, toe enjoy a broad range of graphic signals, that were often extremely subtle.
  • The record covers were created at a time when design was beginning to assume creative importance in consumer society.
  • As the 1980's unfolded, designers began to apply post-modern theory to a more self-conscious deconstruction of design's inbuilt assumptions and of its persuasive power as public communication.
  • by the end of the 1980's, when this style has seemingly run it's course, it was possible to believe post-modern graphic design over over and other stylistic approaches had taken its place.
  • Consequently, the post-modern style is, hybrid, double-coded based on fundamental dualties.
